Phone running slow? Try these seven fixes first

A phone that feels slow is not always old. Often it is full, outdated or running too much in the background. Work through this list in order.
- Restart it. It clears memory and stuck processes. Do it at least once a week.
- Check free storage. A phone with almost no free space slows down. Aim to keep a few gigabytes free.
- Install updates. System and app updates often include speed and battery fixes.
- Remove apps you do not use. Look at the list sorted by size and by last used.
- Clear app caches for browsers and social apps that grew large.
- Limit background activity for apps that do not need it, and turn off animations in developer or accessibility settings if you want a snappier feel.
- Back up, then reset. If nothing helps, a factory reset gives a clean start. Back up first.
When it is the hardware
If the phone no longer gets security updates, or the battery drains fast even after these steps, a battery replacement or a new phone is the sensible next step. Ask for a battery check first. It is often much cheaper than a new device.
