Bitwarden free plan: what you actually get without paying

Bitwarden advertises its free plan as “basic password management, always free” – not a trial. We read the company’s pricing page and plans documentation and list below only what Bitwarden itself states, so you can see what the free tier includes before creating an account.

What the free plan includes

According to Bitwarden’s plans documentation, the core password manager is 100% free: unlimited storage for logins, notes, cards and identities, access on any device with sync, the secure password generator, and encrypted export. Bitwarden Send works on the free plan for text. Two-step login is included, by authenticator app, email or a security key. And a free organization lets you share with one other user.

The security model behind it

Bitwarden states that it is open source and uses zero-knowledge encryption: encryption happens on your device, so the company cannot read your vault.

What stays paid

Premium costs $1.65 a month billed annually ($19.80 a year) per the pricing page, and adds file and vault-item Sends, more two-step login methods (Yubico OTP and Duo), 5 GB of encrypted file attachments, the built-in TOTP authenticator, vault health reports, emergency access and priority support. A Families tier covers a household of six.

Who the free plan fits

  • One person who wants every password on every device without a subscription.
  • Anyone willing to set up two-step login once for a large security gain.
  • Two people who need to share a handful of logins.

Plan details change, so check the current pricing page before deciding.

We keep a running list of free tools worth installing in our Tool picks section. A password manager is the one to start with.
